Position: CHEMINFORMATICIAN Company: Thomson Scientific Location: Toronto, Canada Purpose: The applicant must be knowledgeable and experienced on a wide array of current chemistry resources. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for integrating chemical content sources from multiple databases into an existing bioinformatics web application. Proficiency in JAVA and Perl is preferred, and experience with bioinformatics tools a clear benefit. Responsibilities: This position is responsible for: * integrating chemical content from reference databases into a high-profile Java web application; * developing strategies and processing workflows for chemistry database integration efforts; * building software interfaces to enable annotation, search and retrieval of chemical structures; * designing robust quality assurance frameworks to assure data integrity; * implementing software to be deployed in a parallel computing environment together with a skilled software development team; * maintaining associated systems and applications as necessary; and * other duties assigned as required. Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a team player and will possess: * an undergraduate degree in computer science or chemistry related field; * min. 4-yrs software development experience in a production environment; * hands-on experience with a wide array of data formats employed to depict chemistry information (MOL/SDF/RDF, PubChem XML, CML, PDB, MIF, InChI/SMILES); * hands-on experience with toolkits commonly employed to capture, index and/or manipulate chemistry data (MDL/Isentris, JChem/MarvinBeans, OpenBabel, MOE); * experience developing and optimizing database driven applications; * hands-on experience with chemical structure visualization tools (MDL/Chime, Cn3D, MarvinView, KegDraw) * hands-on experience with chemical structure databases (CAS, PubChem, Crossfire Beilstein); * hands-on experience in developing Java applications using modern IDEs (Eclipse, NetBeans) and application development frameworks (Struts, Spring); * solid understanding of organic chemistry; and * LANGUAGE SKILLS - Java (Servlets, JSP, JAXP, JSTL, JAXB, JDBC), Perl, PHP. Familiarity with concepts from molecular biology and bioinformatics and familiarity with database design in MySQL or Oracle will be considered an asset.
