Molecular Enzymology
Structure, Function and Biotechnological Exploitation of Enzymes
An Interdisciplinary Biomolecular PhD Program in Graz
Austrian Science Foundation
University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology, Austria

The Austrian Science Foundation has approved a new PhD-program in
'Molecular Enzymology'. The program has been set up at the University of
Graz and the Graz University of Technology, involving 20 research groups
from both institutions. The aim of the program is to provide outstanding
scientific training to exceptional young scientists in different areas
of the molecular biosciences, including structural biology and
biomolecular modeling. The program comprises extensive training
activities in addition to the project-related PhD research, including
seminars, local and international laboratory training courses,
participation in international conferences and extended scientific
missions to laboratories outside Austria.

Research topics of the program are:
             the discovery of enzymes
             the molecular structure of enzymes
             enzyme mechanisms
cellular and metabolic function of enzymes
exploitation of enzymes for biotechnological and
             pharmaceutical applications

Research disciplines include:
             biochemistry
             bioinformatics
             biotechnology
             molecular and cellular biology
             microbiology
             pharmacology
             organic chemistry
             structural biology

The program is open to any student who has the equivalent of a masters
degree in any subject from chemistry to biology, including biochemistry,
micro- or molecular biology, pharmacology etc. 25 PhD positions will be
filled in spring 2008. Participants will be selected on a competitive
basis. Students are invited to apply now.
