Subject: 08.04.10 Postdoc position in theoretical organic chemistry, Uppsala University, Sweden
A one-year postdoctoral position in theoretical organic chemistry is
available in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of
Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden.
The preferred start date is during summer 2008, and the position is
funded by the Carl Trygger foundation through a fellowship, exempted
from tax, of approximately 23 000 euro/year.

The research projects of the postdoc will involve quantum chemical
calculations of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states of
fulvenes and substituted olefins in the context of excited state
aromaticity (see e.g. JACS 2004, 126, 13928; J. Org. Chem. 2005, 70, 9495;
Chem. Eur. J. 2007, 13, 6998; and ChemPhysChem 2008, 9, 257). One aim of
the project is to predict and design fulvenes with a broad range of
singlet-triplet energy gaps, another aim is to enhance the understanding
of how excited state aromaticity connects to the profile of the excited
state potential energy surface for olefin Z/E-photoisomerization. Good
familiarity with quantum chemical calculations of electronically excited
states is therefore highly desirable.

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with
experimentalists. A suitable candidate therefore has a theoretical
background, however, has a wish and ability to interact in a larger
multidisciplinary environment.
Applications to the position should be sent by email to Dr. Henrik
Ottosson, and should besides CV, publications list, and contact
information of three reference persons, also contain a brief description
of the applicant's future vision.

Note that the position needs to be filled urgently. The announcement
may therefore be closed prior to the deadline (May 12) in case a good
candidate has been found.
