POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITIONs IN COMPUTATIONAL/THEORETICAL CHEMISTRY

Department of Chemistry

Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling (CASCaM)

University of North Texas

The Department of Chemistry, and the Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling (CASCaM) at the University of North Texas (UNT) seek highly qualified applicants for 5 postdoctoral research positions in computational/theoretical chemistry. The successful candidates will participate in multi-disciplinary, federally funded projects on areas ranging from code development to catalyst design.

Qualifications:

- A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related area is required.

- A working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: ab initio quantum mechanics, atomistic simulations using classical/quantum potentials, modeling of solid and surfaces. Experience in several of these areas is preferred.

- A working knowledge of FORTRAN, C, or C++ is beneficial.

- Experience with popular commercial and/or public domain codes is required.

- Experience with and desire to collaborate with experimentalists in a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of chemists, materials scientists, and engineers.

Projects for which post-doctoral positions are currently available include:

(1) Position with Professors Wes Borden and Tom Cundari Study of catalyst design as part of CASCaMs participation in the NSF-funded Center for Enabling New Technologies through Catalysis (CENTC; http://depts.washington.edu/centc/).

(2) and (3) Positions with Professor Angela Wilson Ab initio quantum chemistry method development. Skills in method development and coding within ab initio quantum chemistry programs is required. For one of these positions, strong preference will be given to those who have experience with multi-reference methodologies.

(4) Position with Professors Tom Cundari and Angela Wilson Research at the interface of chemistry and materials science to study properties relevant to aerospace materials.

(5) Position with Professors Tom Cundari and Angela Wilson Research will entail modeling of biological/inorganic systems and will require ab initio/DFT modeling of metal complexes experience.

Funding for these positions is available September 15, 2008. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until positions are filled. Interested applicants should send a CV with a cover letter, the names of at least three references, and a one-page description documenting their experience as it pertains to the qualifications listed above. Applications must be submitted in a single PDF format file via email to untcascam- -yahoo.com. To identify the email as an application for these positions, the subject line should contain the phrase postdoc (1), postdoc (2), etc. to indicate the position number of interest.

CASCaM is a federally sponsored center of excellence in advanced scientific computing, which currently includes 11 UNT faculty members from Chemistry and Engineering. CASCaM has a 5 Tflop, 2000-core computing facility dedicated to computational chemistry research, which is maintained and operated by a Ph.D.-level research scientist. The AFRL, DOE, NSF, Welch Foundation, and other agencies fund current CASCaM research.

UNT is a Class I Doctorate Granting Institution in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex, and is 30 minutes from the DFW International Airport. UNT is the third largest university in Texas with over 35,000 students. UNT is an AA/ADA/EOE institution. Women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. The DFW metroplex has more than six million people, numerous industrial establishments, and excellent school districts. This area and the university provide exceptional cultural and educational opportunities as well as employment opportunities for spouses.
