Title of the Project: Multiscale modeling of the blood clot formation.

Description: Following a rupture in blood vessels, components in
blood and the vessel wall interact rapidly to form a thrombus (clot)
to limit hemorrhage. This hemostatic response is rapid and
regulated, since excessive and inappropriate clotting can occlude
blood flow through the vessel. The biomedical importance of these
reactions is underscored by the severe and lethal consequences
resulting from failure and disregulation of the hemostatic system.

The overall goal of the project is to develop a 3-dimensional model
and a computational toolkit for simulating thrombus formation.
Computational tools will be validated with specifically designed
experiments to test predictions of thrombus development, structure
and stability. This position is a part of research collaboration
between University of Notre Dame and Indianan University School of
Medicine.

Requirements: A PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics,
Chemistry or Material Science is required. Applicants should have a
strong background in computational methods and parallelization
algorithms for Monte Carlo simulations. Any knowledge in sensitivity
analysis, mathematical modeling, stochastic PDE, uncertainty
quantification and statistical physics is a definite asset.

Location: University of Notre Dame
Duration: One year with possible extension to up to three years
Starting Date: end of September 2008
