Subject: 09.11.10 Postdoc and PhD position in Computational Surface Chemistry, Erlangen, Germany
          Postdoc Position and PhD Studentship

in Surface Chemistry and Materials Science

     ICMM, University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany

A postdoc position and a PhD studentship are available immediately
at the Interdisciplinary Center for Molecular Materials (ICMM) of
the University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. You will work in the
group of Prof. Bernd Meyer on projects in the fields of surface
chemistry of transition metal oxides and heterogeneous catalysis.
The research will be focused on the characterization of adsorbates,
how they can modify the structure and properties of surfaces, and
the elucidation of possible mechanisms of surface reactions. The
applied methods include density-functional calculations and ab-initio
molecular dynamics simulations of complex chemical processes.
For some recent work, see e.g. PRL 98, 186102 (2007); Angew. Chem.
Int. Ed. 46, 4894 (2007); Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 46, 7315 (2007);
PRL 101, 236401 (2008).

The work will be done in close collaboration with experimental research
groups, in particular with the group of Prof. Christof W"oll at the
Institute for Functional Interfaces (IFG) of the Karlsruhe Intitute of
Technology (KIT). For more information, see: http://www.kit.edu and
http://www.pc.ruhr-uni-bochum.de .

The ICMM offers an exciting interdisciplinary research environment
(http://www.chemie.uni-erlangen.de/icmm). Last year the German
Research Council has rated the chemistry department of the University
Erlangen-Nuremberg as one of the top five chemistry research institutions
in Germany (http://www.wissenschaftsrat.de/pilot_start.htm).

Postdoctoral position: candidates must hold a doctoral degree in chemistry,
physics, materials science or a related field and should have a strong
background in surface science, as well as experience in density functional
electronic structure calculations. Good communication skills both orally
and in written English are required.

PhD studentship: candidates must hold an appropriate degree (Diplom/MSc/MEng)
in chemistry, physics, materials science or a related discipline with a solid
background in theory. Students with above average academic record will have
the opportunity to apply to the `Graduate School of Molecular Science' which
is part of the Bavarian Excellence Initiative (http://www.gsms.uni-erlangen.de).

Please send your application including CV, a list of publications, a short
research profile and contact addresses of academic references (preferably
by email) to
