Subject: 16.07.12 Postdoctoral Appointee-Molecular Simulation
What Your Job Will Be Like
The Geochemistry Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque,
New Mexico) is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct research in
molecular simulation of interfacial phenomena, particularly mineral-fluid
interfaces. The research primarily involves classical simulation of
structure, adsorption, and transport properties in shale nanopores,
although experience with quantum methods is also beneficial.
On any given day, you might be called on to:
design, perform, and analyze molecular simulations
write research manuscripts
conduct work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
attend and present at technical conferences or program meetings

Qualifications We Require
Ph.D. (within the last five years) in materials science, chemistry,
geochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline with
experience in atomistic modeling is required.
Qualifications We Desire
Relevant background in a Linux environment with scripting and scientific
programming is also desired.

About Our Team
The Geochemistry Department has expertise in three areas: 1)
molecular-scale modeling, 2) experimental geochemistry, and 3) applied
environmental/chemical engineering. We tackle geosciences-related problems
with an application for carbon sequestration, unconventional oil and gas
recovery, nuclear waste management, and environmental remediation. In
addition, we reach beyond the subsurface environment looking at nuclear
weapons applications and air-borne contaminant detection and removal.
Program focus is currently on chemical effects on fracture initiation and
propagation, heterogeneous redox chemistry on clay mineral surfaces,
coupled geochemistry and geomechanics in shales, and permeable reactive
barriers for soil radionuclide remediation. Computing facilities for
molecular modeling include a cluster (CPU nodes, GPU nodes) maintained by
the Geochemistry Department as well as the Sandia High Performance
Computing. In addition, we have 3,000 square feet of laboratory space
that includes the following analytical equipment: XRD, FTIR, ICP-MS,

Security Clearance
No clearance required.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy
(DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes
personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment
and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a
U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance
abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal
activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can
cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to
perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you
bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a
pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks,
law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education
verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background
investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S.
citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security
clearance as required for the position.
