Theory Facility Staff Scientist (Molecular Foundry) - 84114
Organization: MF-Molecular Foundry

Berkeley Labs Molecular Foundry ( has an opening
for a Theory Facility Staff Scientist responsible for establishing a
world-class research program in theory and simulation of phenomena at the

The Molecular Foundry at LBNL is a national User Facility for nanoscale
science -- one of five Department of Energy Nanoscale Science Research
Centers. As a multidisciplinary research center at the forefront of
nanoscale science, the Foundry is a knowledge-based User Facility that
provides state-of-the-art expertise and instrumentation in nanoscale
science in a safe environment. The Foundrys Theory Facility
aims to develop and apply advanced methods to predict and understand
properties of nanostructured materials over a broad range of length and
time scales.

In this role, you will devote an equal portion of your time to your own
scientific research program and to supporting the research needs of a
diverse international user community. You will be expected to establish
and support your own community of users, who access the Foundry via a
peer-reviewed proposal process, complementing and expanding the
world-class environment of multidisciplinary research at the Molecular

What You Will Do:
- Build a world-class research program in theoretical and computational
nanoscale science at the Molecular Foundry, complementing current
capabilities and expertise in the Theory Facility.
- Foster a thriving multidisciplinary user program through development
of unique expertise and capabilities in theory and simulation relevant to
the nanoscale.
- Collaborate with other Facility scientific staff members to provide
scientific support for users and develop the Facility for use by
scientists (users) from other institutions.
- Carry out active, original research; prepare scientific data for
publication in refereed journals; and present findings at seminars and
- Ensure efficient use of Facility time by coordinating scheduling with
users and Foundry staff.
- Provide users with support through your own efforts in the area of
understanding and calculating phenomena relevant to the nanoscale and
through training of or collaboration with users in this area.
- Share in user-related operation, maintenance/administration, and
development responsibilities within the Theory of Nanostructured
Materials Facility.

What Is Required:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or another discipline
relevant to theoretical and computational nanoscience, or equivalent work
experience in any of or a combination of these disciplines.
- Extensive research experience and an established track record in
nanoscale science.
- Strong background in scientific and/or high-performance computing.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills and the desire to
collaborate with multiple research groups across disciplines.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral or other research experience and an established track
record in nanoscale science.
- User facility experience and/or successful collaboration with
experimental groups or across disciplines.
- International recognition as judged by publication list, highly cited
papers, invited talks at national and international meetings, prizes and awards.
- High level of international recognition in areas related to nanoscale
theory and simulation.
- Demonstrated leadership of independent research and development work.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for
full consideration, please apply by close of business on November 1, 2017.

Application Requirements:
- A full curriculum vitae
- Your plan for building a world-class research program in theoretical
and computational nanoscale science at the Molecular Foundry.
- Your plan for fostering a thriving multidisciplinary User program.
- Up to 5 key publications highlighting your suitability for this position

- This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment that may
be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to a
Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing

considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab,
1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
- Staff Scientists (Career-Track) are professionals with competence and
skills in specialized areas of research and development relating to the
programmatic needs of the Laboratory. Employees at this level may serve
as project or group leader; be assisted by other scientists and engineers
and support staff;have principal investigator status; and directly
supervise other professionals, technical support staff, or students.
This position is for fully qualified and independent scientists with
recognized technical expertise who are capable of leading independent
research and development work. Typically, an individual entering or
being promoted to this level has at least five years of relevant
professional experience beyond their PhD.
