Position for a PhD Student in Computational Chemistry/Biochemistry and Computer-Aided Drug Design are available in the group of Dr. Christo Z. Christov in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI. The position is funded by Michigan Technological University as Graduate Teaching Assistant Scholarship for 5 years. Teaching at undergraduate level will be expected. The applicants should have at least BSc Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline. International applicants should demonstrate English proficiency via TOFLE or IELTS tests scores. The research studies will involve intensive learning and gaining practical skills in Computational Chemistry/Biochemistry, High Performance Computing, Computer-Aided Drug Design, Bioinorganic Chemistry and some Programming The research topics will be focused on understanding enzyme reaction mechanisms, dynamics, spectroscopy and inhibition and utilizing this knowledge for design of enzyme inhibitors as novel more effective drug candidates. The studies will involve learning and applying of Multilevel Molecular Modelling Methods such as Combined Quantum Mechanical and Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) methods, Molecular Dynamics (MD) studies, and Electronic Structure Methods. The main focus of the studies will be on transition metal-containing enzymes involved in epigenetic regulation (histone- and DNA-demethylases) but on also other enzymes (di-iron enzymes, copper enzymes). The research will involve intensive collaborations with other research groups at Michigan Tech, other USA and EU Universities and pharmaceutical companies. The individual interests and attitudes of the students will be taken into account in designing the research studies. Depending on the applicants interests some computational method development could be included. The ideal applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications, experience and interests: - BSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar discipline - Some background and/or strong motivation for research in computational chemistry, biomolecular modelling and drug design - Some experience and/or strong interest for computational work, Linux, shell scripting, programming The start date should be Spring or Fall 2020.
