I plan to attend graduate school and aim to obtain a doctorate in chemistry. I taught myself to program in BASIC on an Apple //c (with 128 Kb of Ram and no hard disk) in 1986 during 6th grade. Since then, I have updated to GW-Basic, then QuickBasic v4.5 and now QuickBasic v7.1 for DOS. I am familiar with C, and, though I know it is much faster than QuickBasic, I stick with QuickBasic since I am much more comfortable with it. With Windows 95 (and beyond) now out, I realize that my text-based program will probably also die out, but I will stand by it based on its speed and simplicity.
