EFFECTIVE SEARCHING OF CHEMICAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC FILES ON THE INTERNET: BUILDING A HIGH PERFORMANCE SEARCH ENGINE FOR PRACTICING CHEMIST. Janusz L. Wisniewski, Beilstein Informationssysteme GmbH, Frankfurt/M, Germany.

A high performance Internet search engine for chemical literature-based data base searches has been designed, implemented and recently released on the Internet by Beilstein. The paper will discuss in detail the design and construction of the search engine (known as NetFire) prepared to handle a heavy traffic of queries, which was achieved by the specifically designed effective load-balancing approach and implementation of the Internet-oriented fast search algorithm. Comparison with other search engines will focus on differences and/or similarities as far as formulation of queries, speed, and relevance of the resulting hit data are concerned. The paper will also discuss difficulties and particularities of chemical literature data base searches on the Internet in comparison with regular free text data base searches.
