Since he was Dutch (yes, we do produce great chemists), his name is spelled" Johannes Diederik van der Waals", so no capital for the v. When you just quote the last name, it is "Van der Waals", capital V. So when you use his last name for the params, the official Dutch way of spelling would be with a capital V.
