This made me pause. Are there so many choices of free
OSes out there?
I counted Linux, FreeBSD and
friends(NetBSD/OpenBSD...) and what else?

If you mean batch scheduling system then there
are Torque, SGE and, perhaps, DIET... It's not an overwhelming number of
choices here either.

I think this requirement pretty much eliminates
plan9, though I'm not
Seriously though go with Linux and either SGE or Torque, it's not like
there are so many free options
