Dear QSAR and Modeling Society Members:

The purpose of this email is to inform you that after many
deliberations among the Society Board members, which took place in the
past 18 months, the Board decided to rename the QSAR and Modeling
Society to:

THE CHEMINFORMATICS AND MODELING SOCIETY.

This change is the third name change in the history of the Society. As
you may know, when formed in 1989, it was initially named *The QSAR
Group*, and the late Phil Magee was its first Chair. In 1995, the
Society changed its name to * The QSAR and Modeling Society*. See also
http://www.qsar.org/aboutsoc/histlist.htm. We believe that changing
the name of the Society is a healthy event that reflects the changing
nature of the research conducted by the growing number of the Society
members.

The subject of the name change was discussed at two recent major
meetings where many current and prospective members of the Society were
present:

* The *Chemoinformatics in Europe: Research and Teaching* Workshop in
Obernai (http://infochim.u-strasbg.fr/chemoinformatics/index.php)
and the
* EuroQSAR (http://www.euro-qsar2006.org/index.php).

The participants of both meetings voted in favor of having
Cheminformatics in the name of the Society.

We feel that at this time we should take into account a strong support
for Cheminformatics both in the US (NIH RoadMap) and Europe (Obernai) as
well as the history of the society and strong interest of its current
members in furthering the field of QSAR.

We look forward to working with you to further the mission of our
Society as the only international society focused on advancing the
cheminformatics and QSAR research discipline.
