1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================

-Probing Cartilage on a Nanoscale
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=1
The molecular "bristles" key to cartilage function are revealing new secrets
thanks to novel nanoscale mechanical measurements by MIT researchers that
will also help characterize other components of the tissue that cushions our
joints. Understanding cartilage function-and disfunction-on a molecular
level could lead to cures for diseases such as osteoarthritis and techniques
for repairing cartilage damaged in accidents.

-Probable Causes of Hybrid Plant Vigor
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=2
Agricultural breeders have long observed that when plants or animals from
different strains are interbred, the offspring tend to be stronger,
healthier or generally more fit than either of their parents, although no
one knew why this occurred. Now plant geneticists investigating the maize
(corn) genome at Rutgers' Waksman Institute of Microbiology have discovered
a possible explanation for this phenomenon, known as heterosis or hybrid
vigor.

-Targeting Toxins to Tumor Blood Vessels
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=3
Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas
have demonstrated in mice that a new drug formed by linking a vascular
endothelial growth factor to a toxin will target and destroy the blood
vessels supplying a malignant tumor.

-Evolutionary Success After Mass Extinctions
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=4
A significant number of organisms that survived the five greatest mass
extinctions in Earth's history subsequently failed to achieve evolutionary
success, according to a new study published by the University of Chicago's
David Jablonski.

-Brain Scan Predicts Antidepressant Response
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=5
A new UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute study shows for the first time that
measurable changes in the front of the brain can predict the effectiveness
of an antidepressant within days of treatment - weeks before a patient
begins to feel better.

-FEATURE: Heterocyst or Not Heterocyst?
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=6
What is it in a cell that drives it to become one type of cell rather than
another? Or for that matter, what is it in a cell that summons it not to
budge? It is the fascinating world of cell fate, one of the most intriguing
questions developmental biologists have been asking themselves for centuries
now. The blue-green algae cyanobacteria Anabaena is a perfect illustration
of one model which has been on the scene for some time.

5. FEATURED EMPLOYER
===========================================================================

Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ONXX), is building a biopharmaceutical company
that changes the way cancer is treated. Our scientists engineer innovative
cancer treatments based on therapeutic adenoviruses. These agents multiply
in malignant cells, destroy them, and spread to neighboring cancer cells
with little or no apparent harm to normal tissue. ONYX-015 has advanced to
Phase III clinical status since entering the clinic in 1996. For current
openings:

===========================================================================
6. MARKET RESEARCH
===========================================================================

Bio.com offers the most comprehensive collection of market research.

-Microsystems & Nanotechnology in the Medical & Biomedical Market
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=9
Nanotechnology and Microtechnology are engineering on an extremely small
scale. Already they are being applied to create many new medical products
for drug delivery, drug screening, diagnostics, patient monitoring and
minimally invasive surgery. A new Report, published by TFI, will provide you
with essential roadmaps so that you can find your way to improving existing
products or creating innovative new products using these technologies. You
will then be able to participate fully in the growth of a new market that is
already worth $5 Billion and is projected to grow to $11 Billion in the next
3 years.

-Tachykinins Receptor Antagonists: One Therapeutic Class for Multiple
Indications?
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=10
The tachykinins were first identified in 1931 however the therapeutic
potential of their receptor antagonists is only starting to be realized.
Tachykinin receptor antagonists have been strongly implicated for the
treatment of at least 6 major disease groups including CNS disorders, pain,
airway disease, urinary incontinence, emesis and intestinal disfunction.
This document from LeadDiscovery is designed to be a key reference point for
researchers seeking new targets for a wide variety of indications or for
researchers who are already involved in the development of tachykinin
receptor antagonists but who are looking to optimize drug development
potential.

-Advertising to Life Scientists
http://www.bio.com/Redirectors/LinkRedirect6_11.jhtml?link=11
Today, the decision as to which publications will provide the greatest
return on investment is becoming increasingly difficult due to the
proliferation of specialized scientific journals, magazines and newspapers.
Based on a 32-question survey of more than 1,100 life scientists,
Advertising to Life Scientists from BioInformatics, LLC is designed to help
marketers evaluate print advertising opportunities in leading life science
publications. The high cost of print advertising demands that special
attention be placed on the selection of the publications (and specific
issues) in which your ad is to appear.
