You may find the free program SciConvert useful. It is offered to the scientific community under an Open Source GPL license and can be found on www.scimetrics.com
SciConvert is a Visual Basic wrapper around OpenBabel with the ability to convert molecules recorded in one format (eg. SMILES) to another (eg. MDL SD).
Its limitations are those of OpenBabel. To find out more about OpenBabel go to http://openbabel.sourceforge.net/
