Rosenkranz / Biochemist who pioneered predictive toxicology Wednesday, December 01, 2004 By Byron Spice, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dr. Herbert S. Rosenkranz, a biochemist who pioneered the use of computer programs to predict the toxicity of chemical pollutants, died Saturday at his home in Boca Raton, Fla., of cancer. He was 71. Dr. Rosenkranz served as interim dean of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health from 1998 to 2001. He had joined Pitt in 1990 as chairman of the public health school's department of environmental and occupational health. Though he had retired from Pitt in 2002, Dr. Rosenkranz became a professor of biomedical science at Florida Atlantic University and remained an active researcher. "I just talked with him last week," said Albert Cunningham, an assistant professor at Louisiana State University who had been his student at Pitt and continued to collaborate with him. "I had just sent him a [scientific] paper for him to read. "He was tireless," Cunningham said. "Even up until the end, I could never keep up with him." Born in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Rosenkranz received his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the City College of New York in 1954 and earned his doctorate in biochemistry at Cornell University Medical College in 1959. Before joining Pitt, he held professorships and chairmanships at Columbia and Case Western Reserve universities. His research focused on understanding how environmental pollutants could cause cancer and on developing better ways to detect these chemicals. At Case Western, he and a colleague, Gilles Klopman, developed one of the first computer programs designed to predict the carcinogenicity of chemicals based on their chemical structure, thus helping to launch the field of predictive, or computational, toxicology. The use of these computer tools was at the heart of a program launched in 1999 by Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University and the Environmental Defense Fund to speed the toxicity testing of about 2,800 industrial chemicals and reduce the need for animal testing of those chemicals. "He was an eminent scholar and scientist, and a person of great wisdom and integrity who remained loyal to the university throughout his career in Pittsburgh and into his retirement," said Dr. Arthur S. Levine, Pitt's senior vice chancellor for the health sciences. "He was like my academic father," Cunningham said. "It sounds kinda corny, but he was very pleasant to work with. He never thought of people working for him, but working with him. Even though he was far ahead of everyone else, he considered everyone his equal." In 2002, the public health school established the Herbert S. Rosenkranz Award, which recognizes research excellence by a student, in honor of his dedication to improving student research. He is survived by his wife, Deanna, and eight children: daughters Pnina Weiss of Orange, Conn., Margalit Heim of Pittsburgh, Dara Rosenkranz of Los Angeles, Sara Soued of Boca Raton, Naomi Rosenkranz of Miami, and Tsilila Goldberg of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; and sons Joshua Rosenkranz of New York City and Amiel Rosenkranz of Houston. Memorial contributions can be made to Boca Raton Synagogue, 700 Montoya Circle, Boca Raton, FL 33433, or AMIT, 22139 Larkspur Trail, Boca Raton, FL 33433.
