1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================

-Tracking 3-D Movement of Cancer Cells
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800025
Cancer researchers know the disease spreads from organ to organ in a non
random pattern, but they are unable to predict exactly how cancer will
spread, in part because of the limited tools available to study cancer
cell migration in a controlled laboratory setting. In groundbreaking new
research, Rice University scientists have designed a computerized system
that can track the movement of individual cancer cells growing in a
three-dimensional culture of model living tissue.

-Yeast Research Targets Drug Resistance Battle
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800026
Microbes that survive drug treatment often become drug-resistant. Botany
researchers have determined how this happens by studying the yeast
Candida albicans and its genetic changes when exposed to drugs.

-New Enzyme May be Acetaminophen Target
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800027
For decades, millions of physicians have advised their patients to take
acetaminophen without understanding how or why the popular medicine
works. Now, a new Brigham Young University study has discovered what
could be the enzyme the drug attacks to relieve pain.

-Researchers Devise Novel Gene Therapy Technique
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800028
Researchers at Stanford University Medical Center have devised a way to
sneak DNA into skin cells taken from people with a potentially deadly
genetic skin disorder. These modified cells later formed normal,
healthy skin when transplanted onto the skin of mice.

-Keeping Cancer Fighting T Cells in Check
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800029
Many cancer patients generate immune cells capable of specifically
attacking their tumors, but the cells rarely do, in fact, target a
patient's cancer. What prevents these potentially helpful cells from
taking action? And is there anything that might be done to unleash them?

-Prostate Cancer Gene Discovered
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800032
Scientists in the Center for Human Genomics at Wake Forest University
School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions have discovered
a gene that "may play an important role in prostate cancer susceptibility
in both African-American men and men of European descent."

-FEATURE: Frontiers in Biological Imaging
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800030
Bio.com is pleased to announce the start of a new column, "Frontiers in
Biological Imaging," by Dr. Stephen Ross, the senior applications
scientist for Nikon Instruments. In this first installment, Dr. Ross
introduces two methods that he will cover during the months of October
and November -- Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer and Total Internal
Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy. We invite you to submit any questions
you have on these topics by email to editor * bio.com.

6. MARKET RESEARCH
===========================================================================

Bio.com offers the most comprehensive collection of market research.

-Cancer Therapeutics: Global Markets and Developments
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800018
Cancer accounts for approximately 22% of all deaths, which makes it the
second leading cause of death in the U.S. after heart disease. The quest
for effective cancer treatments continues to be one of the highest
priorities of pharmaceutical companies. This report, Cancer Therapeutics:
Global Markets and Developments, provides a comprehensive description of
current products and advances worldwide in the cancer therapeutics
market. The report includes an analysis of potential product offerings
and insight into future markets, including market projections.

-High Content Screening: Parallel Analysis Fuels Accelerated Discovery
and Development
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800020
Pharmaceutical companies face significant challenges in transforming the
promise of the genomics revolution into a pipeline of safe and effective
new drugs. Overcoming these challenges will require pharmaceutical
companies to make a number of changes to the traditional drug discovery
process. Given the high cost of failure in drug development, it is
crucial that researchers have tools that provide high-quality information
about drug targets. High-Content Screening: Parallel Analysis Fuels
Accelerated Discovery and Development examines the potential benefits
of new and emerging high-content-screening assays as critical tools in
the drug discovery and preclinical drug development process.

-GPCRs: The Targets of Today's Drugs and Tomorrow's Blockbusters
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800021
G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) have proven to be a highly amenable
target class to successful therapeutic intervention. GPCR-directed drug
discovery is in its infancy, with product sales of compounds targeting
known GPCRs exceeding $30 billion -- newly discovered orphan GPCRs have
tremendous potential! D&MD's GPCRs: The Targets of Today's Drugs and
Tomorrow's Blockbusters Market Analysis Report will benefit those
companies requiring an objective analysis of the technical, commercial,
and legal and patent aspects of the GPCR pharmaceutical class. Further,
this Report provides thorough profiles of those companies currently
active within the GPCR space, in addition to exclusive discussions with
four industry professionals engaged in GPCRs.

7. FEATURED SOFTWARE
===========================================================================

Bio.com offers a very comprehensive selection of Life Science related
software. Check out these latest additions:

-AIA Exporter
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800022
AIA (Analytical Instruments Association) datafiles are the new standard
for chromatography data interchange. Most of the manufacturers are now
adopting this standard. This standard makes it possible to read datafiles
created by one manufacturer's chromatography data handling system to be
read by another manufacturer's system and for third party software
developers to develop applications for multiple brands of systems. These
datafiles contain information such as sample description, raw data,
detection method, and peak processing results. AIA Exporter reads the
header information and allows the analyst to view the chromatogram from
these datafiles. The user can also export data from any field and in any
order to CSV, quote separated, and tab delimited datafile formats
enabling the data to be used by other programs.

-Oncology KnowledgeBASE
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800023
This database currently provides detailed information on 1,829 drugs
in development, marketed drugs, drug targets, or enabling technologies,
for treating cancer and complications associated with this disease and
its treatment, such as anemia, cachexia, edema, emesis, hypercalcemia,
infection, mucositis, neutropenia, pain, thrombocytopenia, xerostomia,
etc.

-CIS Chemical Inventory System(TM)
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=800024
The CIS Chemical Inventory System(TM) CISPro Desktop is a high-performance,
relational database system for tracking chemicals and other laboratory
supplies. With CIS, you can maintain a listing of all the chemicals in
your facility, and keep track of where they are and how much of them you
have, monitor who uses them and how much, generate reports listing
chemicals by location, vendor, name, CAS#, formula, etc., and quickly
access hazard information during an emergency. The program contains
extensive on-line help, and a complete 12 part tutorial covering all
aspects of operation. The CIS Chemical Inventory System(TM) CISPro Desktop
is a great choice for Windows chemical database management, providing
both ease of use, and powerful features for editing, search & retrieval,
and network environments.
