A ICI-sponsored post-doctoral fellowship is immediately available for a period
of 2 years in the Centre for Molecular Design, University of Portsmouth
(www.cmd.port.ac.uk). The aim of the fellowship is to develop new
methodology and software in the areas of experimental design, data analysis
including QSAR and product optimisation in support of a number of high
throughput experimentation (HTE) projects carried out at ICI sites. A Ph. D in
a numerical area of chemistry such as molecular modelling and QSAR,
cheminformatics or chemometrics is likely to be a key requirement, though
consideration will be given to candidates with other numerical/statistics-
related experience if some reasonable knowledge of chemistry can be
demonstrated. The ability to write computer software is also a requirement.

The successful candidate will work closely in association with Professor David
Livingstone and other University staff but also with ICI personnel (both HTE
and molecular modelling/chemometrics) during short visits to several ICI sites
(in the UK, the Netherlands and USA) for reviews and discussions. The
applicant should therefore have excellent interpersonal skills and a
determination to learn how numerical methods may be applied to complex
industrial problems.

ICI is a world-leading, international, speciality chemicals company with
businesses which manufacture paints and ingredients for foods, fragrances,
personal care products.

The Fellow will join a strong, academic research group with internationally-
recognised expertise in statistical methods applied to related topics in the
pharmaceutical industry, The Centre for Molecular design was established in
1993 under the direction of Professor Martyn Ford. Since that time, it has been
involved in many collaborations with industry and the public sector and has
received funding from both BBSRC and EPSRC. It gained a grade 5 in the
recent HEFCE research assessment exercise.

Remuneration will be at an appropriate point on the Research Fellow salary
scale and will depend on the experience of the successful candidate. Further
information, including terms and conditions, can be obtained at:
www.port.ac.uk/departments/personnel/salresea.htm. The closing date for
applications is July the 31st, 2003. The University of Portsmouth is an equal
opportunities employer and an investor in people.
