1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================

-Gene Implicated in Oxidative Stress
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900031
Oxidative stress is implicated in a fast-growing list of human
conditions, from the superficial to the deadly: diseases such as
cancer, heart disease and neurodegenerative disorders including Lou
Gehrig's disease. Researchers at The Jackson Laboratory announced that
they have located a gene that protects certain brain and retinal
neurons from oxidative stress, and prevents neurodegeneration.

-Key Protein in Fight Against Plant Disease
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900032
A University of Toronto botanist has identified a protein that
ultimately could provide chemical-free ways to protect crops from
disease. "Finding this protein could help make it possible to
genetically engineer crops that resist disease-causing organisms,"
says Robin Cameron, the senior investigator of the study, which
appears in the Sept. 26 issue of Nature.

-Newly Revealed Viral Structure
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900033
An international team of scientists led by researchers at The Wistar
Institute has combined two different imaging techniques to uncover
the molecular-level framework of a common bacteriophage, a virus that
infects bacteria. The results suggest that viruses developed a
continuum of progressively more complex architectural strategies to
cope with their increasing size as they evolved.

-Caspase Deficiency Causes Immune Disorder
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900034
Through studying a genetic condition known to exist in only two
individuals, scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases and their colleagues have found that an enzyme
called caspase-8, known to help trigger apoptosis -- the programmed
death of cells -- is also involved in activating many immune system
cells to fight off infections.

-B Cells and Autoimmune Diseases
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900035
Using genetically altered mice, Yale researchers have generated a
clearer picture of the origins of B cells and their involvement in
autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

-Biochemical "Switch" Directs Muscle Building
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900036
Scientists may soon be able to influence muscle formation more
easily as a result of research conducted in the National Institute
of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases' Laboratory of
Muscle Biology. The researchers there have found that inhibitors of
the enzyme deacetylase can switch the pathway of muscle precursor
cells (myoblasts) from simply reproducing themselves to becoming
mature cells that form muscle fibers (myotubules)

-FEATURE: Genetically Modified Foods in Europe
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900037
Genetically modified food and agricultural biotechnology have generated
considerable interest -- as well as controversy -- in the United States
and elsewhere around the world. While some feel the technology to be
extremely useful and tout its benefits, others raise questions about
how the technology will impact the environment and are also concerned
about the safety of the products for human health. This fact sheet
summarizes the regulations under consideration by the EC and their
effects on U.S.- EU agricultural trade, and looks at the background
issues dividing the U.S. and EU on this topic.

7. MARKET RESEARCH
===========================================================================

Bio.com offers the most comprehensive collection of market research.

-Swedish Biopharma Industry - The Next Wave
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900040
Despite having less than 9 million inhabitants, Sweden has more than
380 biotech companies. In the report, Swedish Biopharma Industry-The
Next Wave, BioSeeker Group analyzes in detail the pharmaceutical
biotechnology (biopharma) industry segment in Sweden. In terms of
numbers, biopharma is the second largest biotech industry segment in
Sweden after the medical device industry. This report focuses on 52
biopharma companies defined by either research and development (R&D) or
search and development (S&D) activities in Sweden. It covers industry
dynamics, market segmentation, collaboration, financial development,
pipeline status and much more.

-Angiotensin as a Potential Target in the Modification of Cognition,
Anxiety and Depression
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900041
According to analysts the current global CNS therapeutics market is
estimated at $40-55 billion, accounting for around 15% of the total
global pharmaceuticals market. Like the CNS market, drugs that have
been launched for the treatment of hypertension are also massive
revenue generators. Over the past decade, angiotensin II receptor
antagonists have gradually been cutting into the market previously
occupied by ACE inhibitors. A body of data has been accumulating
offering evidence that angiotensin receptor ligands may be of use
in the treatment of depression, anxiety and cognitive disorders
including Alzheimer's. Hence this class of molecule may bridge the
two massive fields of CNS and cardiovascular disorders. LeadDiscovery
in collaboration with Dr. Paul Gard, global field leader in CNS actions
of angiotensin ligands, has produced a dossier analyzing potential new
indications for angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

-Pharmaceutical Packaging - Trends Driving Innovation and Market
Opportunities
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900042
Pharmaceutical packaging design is increasingly becoming more complex.
An aging population is creating the need for senior-friendly packaging
features in the very near future. Intensified competition in the
pharmaceutical industry is causing more importance to be placed on
packaging as a product positioning tool-both visually and functionally.
A stronger focus on decreasing medication errors presents an urgent
need to develop packaging systems that are more predictable, more
dependable, and easier to use. Lastly, growing regulatory scrutiny by
various authorities warrants more consideration into the packaging of
these drugs. D&MD's Pharmaceutical Packaging Executive Briefing
provides a thorough review of the pharmaceutical packaging industry,
including the expected impact of the above-mentioned trends over the
next decade, emerging regulatory challenges, novel packaging and market
opportunities, and more.

8. FEATURED SOFTWARE
===========================================================================

Bio.com offers a very comprehensive selection of Life Science related
software. Check out these latest additions:

-pKa Database
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900043
A collection of over 2,000 compounds with up to six pKa values. Quickly
extract data by compound name or pKa value. The program has extensive
sort and search capabilities. The pKa database will save hours of
research time and help remove the frustration associated with finding
the right acid.

-Primer Premier v5
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900044
Want primers that will amplify across species or detect pathogens?
Doing multiplex PCR? Primer design software can be used to design high
amplification efficiency primers for PCR, sequencing and hybridization.
This software designs primers in highly conserved regions using
integrated multiple sequence alignment.

-Mass Spec v3.0
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=900045
A Graphics-Based Mass Spectrum Analyzer -- MassSpec is designed to help
you eliminate the time-consuming and error-prone methods of correlating
structure fragments to peaks observed in a mass spectrum. Use the Tools
Palette to build your structure and MassSpec then generates a database
of fragments resulting from bond cleavages up to three at a time. Enter
a mass number from your spectrum or from the list the program has
created. MassSpec then shows the fragments it has identified, and
highlights them on your structure one at a time.
